Winterization
We are currently in the process of inspecting client sites which have had winterization done in the late fall. Winterization is quite simply, the process of preparing plants for winter. Many plants are susceptible to damage over the winter from a variety of causes. These include wind burn, sun burn, desiccation, girdling, frost heaving, frost cracking, rodent damage, and pest feeding. We try to predict and protect plants prior to damage occurring. The environment, plant species, the presence of pest, and installation time of plants all play a factor in determining what type of winterization is needed. A variety of materials are used to aid in the reduction of potential damage. The methods of application of these materials may also vary and can increase their effectiveness.
Examples of materials used in winterization include; evergreen boughs, burlap, hardware cloth, chicken wire, bark mulch, coco bean mulch, and anti desiccants.
If there is any question that your landscape is in need of winter protection, please contact our maintenance department to schedule a site inspection.
